There are many firms doing various tours around the area, especially with the River Dart being so long and beautiful. We chose one which seemed to be firstly the most professional and secondly included the steam train and a river cruise.
The journey started on the 9.45 steam train from Paignton to Kingswear. As well as the normal carriages there was a Pullman observation carriage which you could pay £1.50 to travel in, this had many more windows and was great for looking at the amazing coastal scenery. On the way to Kingswear, we stopped at Churston (a short distance from Greenway) which was the scene of the C murder in Agatha Christie’s wonderful mystery ‘The ABC Murders’. Poirot and Hastings arrive in Churston at this station before heading onto the cliff to survey the scene of the murder. We plan to wander along this route tomorrow.
Once in Kingswear, a passenger ferry was waiting to take us over to Dartmouth. We stayed here for a couple of hours before our river cruise to Totnes. The stay was very pleasant, apart from a seagull pinching my quiche for dinner!! I sulked so Anne bought me a proper Devon ice-cream!
Anyway, the trip up to Totnes was excellent, and we got superb views of the glorious scenery of the area and of course Greenway which you get a cracking view from river.
Once in Totnes we had a little wander, and then took an open top bus back to Paignton. A very enjoyable, but tiring day.
